MissionThe mission of Art is Primary is to bring an artist studio environment into the elementary school system through a loosely structured program of after school activity that is not concerned with the curriculum restraints and expectations used during the school day. The intention is to create a fun, engaging and total environment that enhances children's ability to be observant, creative, and expressive both individually and as a group. We want to create an environment of creative play that the kids can't wait to get to and, once there, don't want to leave. That is when we know it is working correctly. The program uses various creative techniques to help create a sense of community and individual empowerment through an exploration of the underlying fundamental principle of order in the creative part of the mind that is more about knowing than about knowledge. Through the process of working in an art studio under the direction of a seasoned working artist coupled with the careful documentation of the group's progress in their daily school activities, the Art is Primary program hopes to show marked improvement in the group's scholastic work. This will show the great need of using the arts as a primary structure through which to teach and to learn especially at the elementary school level. Through experiement, observation and documentation a program will be designed that can be used as a model for other elementary schools. |
